What is a Fish Camp?

If you grew up in the south you probably have been to a fish camp. Fish camps have a fairly unique history behind them. Let’s cover a brief history behind the term fish camp.

Back in the 1800s, men would go fishing to provide food for their families. They would camp out along the banks of the river and sit and catch fish. While there, to eat, they would cook some of the fish that they had caught.

Fish Camps to Restaurants

Soon, more and more people started showing up and before long, they would have a huge camp. Some moved their camps closer to their homes and started charging people to come to eat.

Fish camps were dotted all along the river banks and lakes throughout the South. Many of them were converted into full-time restaurants that serve guests. Many people travel for miles and miles to visit these establishments.

Typical Menu at a Fish Camp

Now fish camps are throughout the south. Most serve fried food as their main dishes. Fish would include perch, flounder, and catfish, and some have even added tilapia to their menu.

Some of the sides that may be served at a Southern fish camp would be hush puppies, Cole slaw, and fries. Most fish camps that you come across in the south have been at that location for many many years. Most have been passed down through generations of family members.

The menu at Captain Steve’s Fish Camp

The menu at Captain Steve’s Family Seafood Restaurant is very diverse. First off, you have your typical Fish Camp fare like fried Flounder, perch, and catfish. They even have Calabash Shrimp and Deviled Crab (another fish camp favorite).

What sets Captain Steve’s apart is the other type of food that they serve. Not only do they have fried fish and shrimp, but they have very good grilled chicken, pork chops, hamburger steak, Gyro, Subs, Cheeseburgers, and even Spaghetti.

One of my favorite dishes to get here is their marinated chicken tips over rice. This is marinated grilled chicken served over a bed of fluffy rice, with sauteed peppers, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes on top. It is so yummy.

I typically say that if you are going to a fish restaurant stick with what the restaurant is known for. In this case, you can not go wrong with anything on their menu in my opinion.
