If you’ve followed Southern Food Junkie for very long, then you already know I take barbecue seriously. Living in the Carolinas means there’s no shortage of BBQ restaurants, but every once in a while you find a place that keeps pulling you back in. For me, The Smoke Pit is one of those places.

This Monroe location is one of several Smoke Pit locations around the Charlotte metro area. The original restaurant started in Concord, NC, and they’ve continued expanding with locations in Monroe, Gastonia, Charlotte, Salisbury, and Mooresville.
A BBQ Spot Worth Driving To
The first thing I noticed pulling up to The Smoke Pit in Monroe was how clean and inviting the restaurant looked. It has that modern Carolina barbecue restaurant feel while still keeping that local BBQ atmosphere.
Inside, the restaurant has a warm wood interior with plenty of seating and a laid-back atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and enjoy your food.

This feels like the kind of place you could stop by after church on Sunday, grab lunch with family, or meet up with friends for barbecue and sweet tea.
The Pulled Pork Is Incredible

I’ve eaten at a lot of BBQ restaurants over the years, and honestly, the pulled pork here is still some of the best I’ve had around North Carolina.
The pork had a smoky flavor without being overpowering, and it stayed juicy and tender the entire meal. You can tell they take their time smoking it low and slow.
One thing I really appreciated was that the barbecue didn’t need to be covered in sauce to taste good. That’s usually how I judge good BBQ.

The sides were also excellent. On this visit I had potato salad and collard greens, and both had that homemade flavor you hope to find at a real Southern barbecue restaurant.
But one of my favorite little touches was the pickled red onions and pickles served on the side. That tangy flavor mixed perfectly with the smoky pork.

Don’t Skip The Sauces

If you love trying different barbecue sauces, The Smoke Pit has several options sitting right at the table.
They had sweet sauces, vinegar-based sauces, and even some with a little heat. I found myself trying different combinations throughout the meal.
The sauces added flavor without overpowering the meat, which I always appreciate.
The Story Behind The Smoke Pit

One thing I thought was really interesting was reading the story behind the restaurant.
The Smoke Pit originally opened in Concord, NC in 2014 with one smoker and a passion for real barbecue. Over the years, it has grown into multiple locations around North Carolina while still keeping that local barbecue feel.
I always enjoy supporting restaurants that grow from small beginnings into something bigger while staying true to their roots.
