I have stated many times that Western North Carolina is one of my favorite places to visit. There is something about that part of the Smoky Mountains that has a special place in my heart.
It could be the childhood memories that I have experienced there. Or, like a close friend of mine said when talking about a restaurant we both have been going to since childhood: "It is not really about the food for me but about the atmosphere, tradition, and memories."
Either way, the food and places we visit as children hold special places in our hearts. It is a way of connecting those memories with the past. Even if the food or place is not as good as we remember, you still like to visit it for memories.
Each time I visited Maggie Valley, NC, we also visited nearby Waynesville. Waynesville is similar in style to Asheville, NC, but on a smaller scale.
There are many cool and unique shops located in downtown Waynesville. There are just as many awesome restaurants throughout the town too.

Haywood Smokehouse
For years, readers of this post have been telling me that I needed to try Haywood Smokehouse, and on our latest trip to Waynesville, I finally listened! Located in the Hazelwood district in an old house, Haywood Smokehouse has a laid-back, homey atmosphere and is known for its Texas-style brisket and other smoked meats.
I went with the half slab of dry-rubbed ribs, collard greens, and mac and cheese. The ribs were definitely the standout for me. They had a peppery rub with a slight sweetness, a nice smoke ring, and just the right amount of bite. The collard greens were another favorite, and the portions were big enough that I left full with food still left over.
Now I understand why so many people kept recommending this place! I would definitely eat here again, although next time I feel like I owe it to myself to try the brisket.

Ammons Drive-In & Dairy Bar
Next up (these are in no particular order by the way) we check out a restaurant located at the intersection of Hwy 19 (Dellwood Rd) and Hwy 276. Ammons Drive-In is serving up your classic drive-in meals.
The last time I visited, I ordered the Hamburger Steak, and it was awesome. You can come in and sit down or pull up for the curb service.
They serve all your classic drive-in meals like cheeseburgers, hamburgers, hot dogs, fish sandwiches, and chicken strips.
After your meal, save room for a milkshake or banana split. With its classic diner atmosphere and homestyle food, Ammons has earned a spot among my favorite places to eat in Waynesville.

Fat Buddies Ribs and BBQ
Next, we have another BBQ joint on the list. Fat Buddies is your typical southern BBQ restaurant. They have two locations, one in Franklin, NC, and one in Waynesville, NC. It is located in the Waynesville Plaza right off Hwy 276. They are serving up some of Western NC's best BBQ and ribs.
They have all your normal BBQ offerings and a few unique ones like fried pickles and fried green beans.
Fat Buddies is certainly deserving of a spot among the best restaurants in Waynesville, NC, especially if you're craving barbecue and hearty Southern favorites.

Jukebox Junction Canton, NC
Although Jukebox Junction isn't technically in Waynesville, it is close by and is one place we like to stop by if we have time. It is located off the beaten path, but it is not that far from downtown Waynesville. We love Jukebox Junction, and its old-school atmosphere and classic comfort food make it one of our favorite restaurants in the Waynesville area.
We found Jukebox Junction by accident one year while visiting a pumpkin patch just around the corner, and it ended up being a great find.
The awesome food, friendly staff, and fun old-school atmosphere have made Jukebox Junction one of our favorite restaurants in the Waynesville area.
The food is always great, and the people working there are extremely friendly. If you visit, I recommend the club sandwich—it’s awesome.
Stop by and check them out—just be sure to have your GPS handy because Jukebox Junction is definitely off the beaten path. That’s part of its charm, though, and it’s easy to see why it’s a local favorite.

Clyde's Restaurant
Clyde’s Restaurant is the kind of place that immediately feels like a classic small-town diner. From the moment we pulled up, I loved the old-school look of the building, and that nostalgic feel carries right inside. We finally stopped in for a meal on one of our recent trips to Waynesville, and I quickly understood why Clyde’s has been a longtime local favorite.
When we visited, Clyde’s was decorated perfectly for fall, which added even more to that cozy, nostalgic diner atmosphere. I imagine they carry that same seasonal charm throughout the year.
One thing that really caught my attention was the classic Clyde’s sign out front. You don’t see many restaurants with signs like this anymore. It has that iconic old-school diner shape and design that fits the restaurant perfectly and makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
The food at Clyde’s was really good. I had the open-faced sandwich smothered in gravy, and that gravy was to die for. And I can’t forget about those homemade rolls—mmm mmm good! My kids had the chicken tenders, and you could tell they were hand-cut and breaded in-house.

Sweet Onion
Sweet Onion is located in downtown Waynesville, just a block away from Frog’s Leap. Every time we’re downtown walking around, I swear I can smell the food coming from Sweet Onion’s kitchen, and it makes my mouth water every time.
Sweet Onion was also one of those restaurants people kept recommending whenever I mentioned we were heading to Waynesville. Eventually, we had to try it for ourselves, and I’m glad we did. We stopped in for lunch, and the food lived up to the recommendations.
With its downtown location, welcoming atmosphere, and consistently good food, Sweet Onion has become one of our favorite places to eat in Waynesville.

Bogarts
Bogart’s is one of those Waynesville restaurants we keep coming back to. We’ve eaten here several times over the years, usually for dinner, and we’ve always had a great experience.
I typically order a steak, and they’ve always been flavorful, tender, and juicy—just the way a good steak should be. We’ve never had a bad meal here, which is one of the reasons Bogart’s continues to be one of our favorite places to eat when we visit Waynesville.

Known as a fun place to visit, I compare it to a smaller Asheville, NC. It is a quiet, small town, but it has many cool shops and excellent dining options.
Waynesville, NC is roughly 26 miles west of Asheville, North Carolina.
Waynesville, North Carolina is very close to the eastern side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are lots of outdoor activities to do in and around this area. Located just minutes from Maggie Valley, NC, and Cataloochee Valley, where elk were reintroduced in the early 2000s. You can visit this area, hike, see the Elk, visit nearby Cherokee, and ride the train in Bryson City, among other things. It is a great central location to do many things to keep you occupied. Also, Waynesville has awesome shops such as the Mast General Store and food options.

The Tipping Point, The Haywood Smokehouse & The Chefs Table, all located in Waynesville, would probably make your list. Next time that you're in town, check them out if you can. I was going to say two of the same ones! Tipping Point has awesome burgers and fish tacos! And Haywood Smokehouse will beat Fat Buddies every time! Never been to Chef's Table though... We'll have to try it sometime! Another recommendation... Go to the Tipping Point for supper, and then catch a movie at The Strand, located a little further down Main Street! It's small, old fashioned, and TOTALLY worth your time! Ooh, and they serve the best homemade ice cream (made by The Hop) and homemade sodas (made by Waynesville Soda Jerks)!

Lived in Waynesville for 50 years. Clyde's Restaurant is truly the best place to eat GOOD country food. Me and my husband eat from there at least once a week. My Husband is disabled so I go pick it up and bring it home. Food is always perfect even though it's fixed to go.

Why isn’t Birchwood Hall listed? They put Sweet Onion to shame. Chefs Table isn’t listed either. You didn’t list the best two restaurants in town. Bogarts is good put not quality meat whatsoever. Poor review!!!

Reviews are clearly very speculative. What I may think is the best may not be for the next person. Just like movies, you read reviews, go watch it and love it. The reviews may say otherwise. Bogarts is always listed on trip advisor as number one in the area or close to it. Birchwood Hall wasn't in the area when I wrote this piece. I am sorry you feel this way but I tried to give a variety of choices in restaurant styles. Thanks for your comments.
