Hostess Chocolate Cake Twinkies with Scream Filling review

Twinkies are as iconic as 80’s pop music!

Although Twinkies have never been a favorite of mine growing up, they are truly a iconic snack food. You couldn’t count the times they are mentioned or eaten in a 80’s or even 90’s television shows. Twinkies are truly part of pop culture folk lore. Have you ever heard the story of how long they will last? I am sure you have seen that they can last a mere 10 or even 20 years without spoiling. While that may not simply be true, the fact is the Twinkie is ingrained in our culture.

We almost lost one of our cultures most popular snack food. Back in 2012 Hostess employees went on strike.  So what did Hostess do? They simply said they were closing the doors. Chaos ensued as people envisioned their favorite snacks no more! I know I was upset. Fast forward a few years and all is well now since Hostess sold their brand to a new owner and the now the Twinkies are flying out the ovens.

It is filled with what they call a “Scream Filling.”

The Original Twinkies are a soft and moist yellow or like they call it “Golden” sponge cake. It has a cream filling that is light and airy. This new cake is simply a chocolate cake twinkie. It is the same soft and moist sponge cake. Hostess has filled the cake with what they call a “Scream Filling.” That is their play on the Halloween Holiday season. It is October 31, 2017 and every food company is trying to cash in on the holiday trends. What does Hostess do? They come out with Hostess Chocolate Cake Twinkies with Scream Filling! Gone is the time when companies simply made food for you to enjoy. Now they have to market it towards a certain holiday or season. Now back to the “Scream Filling”, I could not tell a difference between the original filling and this new “Scream Filling.” To me, that is just a marketing ploy. Good job Hostess!

These hit the nail on the head.

I have to be honest here, I love chocolate. So naturally, when I seen these on the shelf, I had to try them. Like I mentioned above, I am not fond of the original Golden Cake Twinkies. To me, the original Twinkies tend to have a chemical after taste. The Hostess Chocolate Cake version did not have that same after taste. These hit the nail on the head for me. Moist, soft, and spongie chocolate cake with a light and airy cream filling. I would give them 4 thumbs up. How can you improve you may ask? Well if it were me, I would add a chocolate coating on the outside because in my opinion, you can never have too much chocolate.
