Midnight Diner Charlotte NC

August 8, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Every year I have to go to Charlotte, NC for a MRI on my back. While we are there, I always try to find a new restaurant to try out. My Appointment time was earlier this year, so when we got finished it was not breakfast time and not quite dinner time either.

At any rate, since we was in between we decided to grab some brunch! We found a cool little place right in the middle of Uptown Charlotte called The Midnight Diner. I absolutely love these old diners cars and we just had to try it out.

Where Is The Midnight Diner Located?

The Midnight Diner is located on E Carson Blvd. in uptown Charlotte, NC. You can see the tall sky scrapers surrounding its location from the parking lot. The Midnight Diner is housed in one of the shiny, stainless steel diner cars. Just like the ones you see in the movies.

I love going to restaurants housed in the old diner cars, it just brings a feeling of nostalgia to my meal.

Diners Are Popular for Party Goers

Just like most diners, Midnight Diner is a 24/7 diner. Serving breakfast all day long. Diners are notorious for party goers looking for a midnight snack. This is usually because they need help sobering up from the hard night of partying.

On the other hand, the party crowd is not all that goes there, this is because the food is usually outstanding at these places. Midnight Diner is no exception to this rule.

What I Ordered

I ordered what they call "The Bubba" and it did not disappoint. The Bubba is a open face biscuit covered with cheesy eggs (although mine did lack some cheese) and sausage gravy.

The Bubba

It came with a side of hash browns that would make Waffle House envious. I have to say that breakfast is my favorite meal and I just love trying out new places, especially breakfast places.

In closing, If you are ever in the Uptown area of Charlotte, North Carolina and looking for a scrumptious breakfast to partake in, check out the Midnight Diner. In my opinion, I am sure it will not disappoint you.

Make sure to check out our video below of our visit there and if you have not yet, please subscribe to our channel so you will be notified of new videos we post. As always we want to thank you for stopping by and we hope to see you on the road sometime! Later on.

Mac’s Speed Shop Review in Matthews, NC – Is It Worth Visiting?

August 1, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

If you are looking for some of the best barbecue in Matthews, NC, there is a good chance you have heard about Mac’s Speed Shop. Known for slow-smoked BBQ, burgers, wings, and a laid-back biker-barbecue atmosphere, Mac’s Speed Shop has become a popular spot around the Charlotte area for locals and visitors alike.

My wife and I recently stopped by the Matthews, North Carolina, location for a date night while exploring the area, and honestly, I could see why so many people talk about this place.

This is a image of the inside of Mac's Speed Shop in Matthews, NC.

Where Is Mac’s Speed Shop in Matthews, NC?

Mac's Speed Shop is located in downtown Matthews, just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating, plenty of TVs, cold drinks, and the smell of smoked barbecue filling the air the second you walk in.

Address:
142 E John St
Matthews, NC 28105

Mac’s Speed Shop first opened in Charlotte in 2005 and has expanded to several locations across North Carolina and South Carolina over the years.

The Atmosphere at Mac’s Speed Shop

One thing that immediately stands out at Mac’s Speed Shop is the atmosphere. It has that perfect mix of Southern barbecue joint, biker hangout, and sports bar all rolled into one.

The place feels casual and welcoming without trying too hard. If you love restaurants with rustic wood, loud conversations, smoked meat, motorcycles, and cold sweet tea, you will probably feel right at home here.

It feels like the kind of place where you can show up in blue jeans after a long day and just relax with good food and friends.

This is a picture of BBQ sauce from Mac's Speed Shop in Matthews, NC.

The Food at Mac’s Speed Shop

Mac’s Speed Shop is known for hickory-smoked barbecue cooked low and slow. Their menu includes pulled pork, brisket, smoked chicken, ribs, burgers, wings, tacos, sandwiches, and Southern-style sides.

Pulled Pork Plate Review

I ordered the pulled pork plate during our visit. The pork had a really good smoke flavor without being overpowering. Sometimes smoked meat can taste too heavy, but this one had a nice, balanced flavor.

The barbecue was tender and juicy overall. I did notice a little fat and gristle mixed in, but the flavor itself was still very solid. The BBQ sauce paired really well with the pork and added just enough sweetness and tanginess.

The sides helped round out the meal nicely and gave it that classic Southern barbecue feel.

Smoked Chicken Wrap Review

My wife ordered the smoked chicken wrap, and honestly, this may have been my favorite thing we tried.

The smoked chicken had great flavor, and the wrap itself tasted fresh and balanced. What really stood out, though, was the slaw. It had a nice combination of sweetness, vinegar, and a little heat that worked perfectly together.

It was one of those meals where you keep saying, “Just one more bite.”

Best Things to Order at Mac’s Speed Shop

If you are visiting Mac’s Speed Shop for the first time, some of the most popular menu items include:

  • Pulled pork BBQ
  • Smoked wings
  • Beef brisket
  • Burnt ends
  • BBQ sandwiches
  • Mac and cheese
  • Smoked chicken wraps
  • Burgers
  • BBQ tacos
  • Fried pickles

Their menu also includes a variety of homemade sauces ranging from sweet Carolina-style BBQ to mustard-based sauces and spicy options.

Is Mac’s Speed Shop Worth It?

In my opinion, yes — especially if you enjoy casual barbecue restaurants with good smoked meat and a fun atmosphere.

No restaurant is perfect, and I always try to give honest reviews. While the pulled pork had a little more fat than I personally prefer, the overall flavor, atmosphere, and experience were still very good.

Mac’s Speed Shop is the kind of place I would gladly visit again if I were in the Matthews or Charlotte area looking for barbecue.

Final Thoughts on Mac’s Speed Shop in Matthews, NC

Overall, Mac’s Speed Shop in Matthews, NC delivers a solid Southern barbecue experience with flavorful smoked meats, good sides, and a fun, laid-back atmosphere.

Punky's Place Dairy Bar and Grill

July 17, 2017 by Ronnie Williams 2 Comments

Note: Punkys Place closed permanently in October 2024

Located on the outskirts of town in Lancaster, South Carolina, Punky's Place Dairy Bar and Grill is a newer restaurant, but it has already been a hit with the locals. They are serving up all the traditional ice cream desserts plus all your short-order grill favorites.

Original location on McIlwain Rd. Punky's is now on Main St in Lancaster, SC

It reminds you of a simpler time, sort of like Mayberry where everyone would go down to Snappy's Lunch to get a fried pork chop sandwich.

Punky's Place is one of those local, favorite restaurants that you just love to go to. You know the kind, where the owners become like friends and all of your friends stop by. It reminds you of a simpler time, sort of like Mayberry where everyone would go down to Snappy's Lunch to get a fried pork chop sandwich. Yeah, it is like that. A neighborhood favorite. It seems like this place has been here forever but the real matter of it is, that it has only been opened a few short years.

They also have one of my childhood favorites, dipped cones.

The picture was taken from Punky's Facebook Page with permission from the owners.

Punky's Place is serving up all the short-order grill favorites like Cheeseburgers, Hamburger Steak, Patty Melts, and chicken wings. They also have friend founders, chicken tenders, and a large array of other mouth-watering delicious food. Of course, when you go, make sure you save room for the star of the show, the dessert. Headlined by a strawberry shortcake dessert that is topped with fresh strawberries, ice cream, and whipped cream. They also have one of my childhood favorites, dipped cones. Mmmm mmm good.

If you are ever in the area, stop in, or better yet, make sure to make a trip to try them out. I am sure you will not regret it. Tell them that Southern Food Junkie sent ya! To see a video of our visit, click on the video below.

Unicoi Preserves Mountain-Grown Goodness

May 28, 2017 by Ronnie Williams 2 Comments

Unicoi preserves are made from the finest wines grown in the mountains of Georgia and are so tasty and satisfying. They go well with many different dishes from cheeses to the traditional Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich.

Come with us as we set sail on a gourmet journey with our exploration of Unicoi Preserves in this detailed product review. Delving into the world of artisanal jams, we uncover the handcrafted excellence and unique flavor profiles that define this Southern gem.

Unicoi Preserves.

What is Unicoi Preserves

Unicoi Preserves is a premium hand-crafted fruit spread product that is produced in the North Georgia Mountains. Their gourmet products are sure to satisfy your taste buds.

Unicoi Preserves is a company that makes its products in small batches. You may be asking what this means or has to do with their product. Well above all, this means quality, not quantity.

Sometimes when things are automated they lose their connection to the people who make them. No doubt this is the same reason that Southern food or soul food is so good. The people that make it put their love and soul into cooking it. Unicoi Preserves is the same way. They love what they do and it shows.

Unicoi preserves salted Carmel peach spread.
Unicoi Preserves Salted Carmel Peach Spread

A few of their Fruit Spreads are even made from wine that is made within the area. This area is known for producing some fantastic wine and even has its wine tour called the Unicoi Wine Trail. This is why Unicoi Preserves fruit spread is called mountain-grown goodness!

How We Discovered Unicoi Preserves

Back in the summer of 2014, our family took our yearly vacation. This particular year we went to Helen, Georgia. While there, we visited a state park called Unicoi State Park.

Meanwhile, I had just gotten over back surgery and was told to do lots of walking. There was a waterfall that we wanted to see that was a moderate hike to get to that was located inside Unicoi State Park. It was a great accomplishment for me and since then that park has had a special place in my heart.

Fast forward a few years, I came across a company with the same name as the park. I had only seen this name at the park, it was so unique that I thought, I wonder what the connection is.

I messaged the company to find out and sure enough, they were from that area. The owners have volunteered at the park and have the same deep connection with the park as I do. They loved the area as well as cooking they combined the two in a very unique product called Unicoi Preserves.

What Flavors Do They Offer?

Unicoi Preserves offers a variety of flavors in their premium fruit spreads. Their current offerings are: Strawberry Vanilla, Salted Carmel Peach, Cherry Key Lime, Cherry Jalapeno, and Apple Cider Pepper spread.

What Does it Taste Like?

Finally, we sampled all of the fruit spreads on an English muffin to give us something neutral so we could have a clean palate to taste.

Which One Was My Favorite?

All of the flavors are so yummy. I tested each one out on an English muffin so I would have some neutral to test it out on. After trying them several times I finally decided on the Strawberry Vanilla as my favorite choice!

Thanks for checking out this review of Unicoi Preserves. We hope that you enjoyed reading about this product as much as we did try it out.

Captain Steve's Family Seafood Restaurant | Fort Mill, SC

May 26, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Today we are going to dive into the coastal charm of Captain Steve's Fish Camp in Fort Mill, SC, as we unravel the seafood delights that make this spot a local gem. From boat-fresh catches to the laid-back atmosphere, join us on a culinary journey that captures the essence of Southern seafood dining.

This is a image of a plate of fried fish, fried calabash shrimp, with a side of French fries and Cole slaw from Captain Steve's in Fort Mill, SC.

What is a Fish Camp?

If you grew up in the south you probably have been to a fish camp. Fish camps have a fairly unique history behind them. Let's cover a brief history behind the term fish camp.

Back in the 1800s, men would go fishing to provide food for their families. They would camp out along the banks of the river and sit and catch fish. While there, to eat, they would cook some of the fish that they had caught.

Fish Camps to Restaurants

Soon, more and more people started showing up and before long, they would have a huge camp. Some moved their camps closer to their homes and started charging people to come to eat.

Fish camps were dotted all along the river banks and lakes throughout the South. Many of them were converted into full-time restaurants that serve guests. Many people travel for miles and miles to visit these establishments.

Typical Menu at a Fish Camp

Now fish camps are throughout the south. Most serve fried food as their main dishes. Fish would include perch, flounder, and catfish, and some have even added tilapia to their menu.

Some of the sides that may be served at a Southern fish camp would be hush puppies, Cole slaw, and fries. Most fish camps that you come across in the south have been at that location for many many years. Most have been passed down through generations of family members.

Captain Steve's Family Seafood Restaurant

Captain Steve's Family Seafood Restaurant has been located on Hwy 21 in Fort Mill, South Carolina for more than 10 years. It is not one of the older establishments we talked about earlier in the post, but that does not mean they do not have a huge following.

This image shows a close up of the Neon Sign at Captain Steve's Family Seafood Restaurant in Fort Mill, South Carolina.

Captain Steve's might even be one of the most popular fish camps in our area.

The menu at Captain Steve's Fish Camp

The menu at Captain Steve's Family Seafood Restaurant is very diverse. First off, you have your typical Fish Camp fare like fried Flounder, perch, and catfish. They even have Calabash Shrimp and Deviled Crab (another fish camp favorite).

What sets Captain Steve's apart is the other type of food that they serve. Not only do they have fried fish and shrimp, but they have very good grilled chicken, pork chops, hamburger steak, Gyro, Subs, Cheeseburgers, and even Spaghetti.

One of my favorite dishes to get here is their marinated chicken tips over rice. This is marinated grilled chicken served over a bed of fluffy rice, with sauteed peppers, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes on top. It is so yummy.

I typically say that if you are going to a fish restaurant stick with what the restaurant is known for. In this case, you can not go wrong with anything on their menu in my opinion.

Conclusion

In wrapping up our exploration of Captain Steve's Fish Camp in Fort Mill, SC, we've delved into the rich history of Southern fish camps and witnessed the transformation of these riverside gatherings into beloved restaurants.

Captain Steve's, though not as ancient as some, stands out as a local gem with over a decade of serving diverse and delectable seafood. Beyond the traditional fish camp fare, their menu surprises with grilled options like marinated chicken tips over rice, showcasing their culinary versatility.

In my opinion, every dish at Captain Steve's is a winner, reflecting their commitment to quality. If you're seeking a delightful seafood experience in the Fort Mill, South Carolina area, Captain Steve's is undoubtedly worth a visit. Check out my review video below for a closer look at this hidden seafood treasure.

The Loose Moose Cottage Concord NC

March 16, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

I have, to be honest with you, I am not a big fan of buffets. Especially the franchise restaurants you go to like Golden Corral and Ryan's, yeah not a fan of those. Most of the time the food is bland and tastes like it all comes out of a can. What I am a fan of, though, is buffets at little country restaurants.

Loose Moose Concord, NC>.

The quality is better and the place is usually cleaner. Now on a recent overnight stay at Great Wolf Lodge (Click the link for that post) in Concord, NC, we ate at a buffet restaurant. This is the review of The Loose Moose Cottage in Concord, NC.

The Loose Moose Cottage is a buffet restaurant located inside Great Wolf Lodge. Although it is still a commercialized restaurant, it is different than your Ryan's and Golden Corrals. The food is much better here at The Loose Moose Cottage.

They serve a better quality of food also. The Loose Moose Cottage serves Breakfast and dinner. What makes it especially nice is the convenience of it. Since it is located within Great Wolf Lodge, you just walk over and eat. It is really that simple.

The Loose Moose Cottage

Great Wolf Lodge can seem like a money pit while staying here. They have everything to entice your kids to want to spend money on. Once they get you in the door they have so many things to do and spend money on. I am sure there are other options as far as restaurants go that are close by. The food may be just as good as The Loose Moose Cottage but by the time you leave you could have just stayed in the house and enjoyed a world class buffet.

Great Wolf Lodge | Concord, North Carolina

March 15, 2017 by Ronnie Williams 3 Comments

Right before Christmas this past year we moved out of our home and into a temporary place to stay. We are a little cramped for room and since the kids have plenty of toys we thought it would be nice to tell the grandparents to get them something other than toys. We had this great idea to take them to Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, NC.

Great Wolf Lodge Water Park

Now, Great Wolf Lodge is a family-friendly resort that has an indoor water park.
The indoor water park is the main draw for the place.

They also have two restaurants, a grill, a pizza place, an ice cream shop, Dunkin' Donuts, a mini bowling alley, an arcade, a spa, and much more. One of the restaurants called the Loose Moose Lodge, is a buffet-style restaurant.

All of this is geared toward kids. There are a few located around the US but the one that is closest to us is in Concord, NC.

Bentley at the Indoor Water Park

This ended up being an awesome present for the kids. This was our second time
coming here and we have had a blast both times. My parents are the ones who gave the present to our kids and also gave each one of the kids gift certificates to Build A Bear. There is so much to do to keep you busy while here but be careful, it can be a money trap. A few money-saving tips would be to book your stay at least three months in advance. Another tip would be to stay during the week. This will also give you a cheaper rate, but it will also be less crowded.

Follow along on our journey. Of Course, if you follow our YouTube channel you already know we regularly post our video journeys on the trips we take.

We are going to start posting them here too so our readers can go along with us too. Posted below will be two separate videos for Day 1 and Day 2. If you want to stay up to date on our YouTube channel, make sure you subscribe to it also. Furthermore, we will have a restaurant review coming Thursday from a restaurant within Great Wolf Lodge.

Texas Hash

March 8, 2017 by Ronnie Williams 2 Comments

Ok, Let's say it is Monday night and it has been a rough day. You get home and think, I got to cook tonight but I do not want to. You did not lay anything out to cook.

You need something good and quick to fix for supper. What do you do? Well, I have the perfect recipe for you, Texas Hash.

Texas Hash

Texas Hash is a combination of hamburger meat, stewed tomatoes, green peppers, and spices then served over rice.  If you did not have any meat thawed, just defrost your hamburger meat and you are golden.

Texas Hash is one of my family's favorites. I have been enjoying this delicious dish since I was a kid. Not only is this a cheap, easy meal to fix, but it is also really good too.

Follow along with us as we show you how to make it. We also have a video we made a few months back that you can watch too.

This is a image showing the finished dish of Texas Hash with some words on the image that say
Yield: 6 people

Texas Hash

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

Texas Hash is a quick, easy meal to make. It consists of Hamburger meat, Stewed tomatoes, Green Peppers, spices, and served over rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Hamburger Meat, If it is frozen, no worries just un-thaw it in the microwave.
  • 1 can Stewed Tomatoes, Do not Drain
  • 1 medium Bell Pepper/Green Pepper, Cored, seeded, and chopped
  • 1 Medium Onion, I omit this in my dish. It tends to give it a sweet taste I do not like. It is optional if you would like it.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Chilli Powder
  • 2 Cup Long Grain Rice
  • 4 Cups water
  • Salt/Pepper, To taste

Instructions

Cooking Rice

  1. In a small stock pot, add 4 cups of water and turn on high heat.
  2. Bring water to a boil and add rice.
  3. Reduce heat and cover till all the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let sit

Hash

  1. While rice is cooking, add 1lb of hamburger meat to a large frying pan and set the burner to medium-high heat. Cook until meat is browned. Then drain off all the grease.
  2. Take your medium bell pepper, core it, remove all the seeds, and then cut it into small pieces.
  3. Add bell peppers, stewed tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, and salt/pepper into the frying pan. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until liquid is reduced by half. Approximately 5 mins.
  4. After reducing the liquid and your rice is done, it is time to eat! Serve the Texas Hash on top of the rice and enjoy!

Notes

Start your rice first so that it can be cooked while you are cooking your Hash mixture. Do not drain the stewed tomatoes. Onions can be added as well. It tends to give the dish a sweet taste that I do not prefer so I omit them.

The Junction Landrum, SC

March 7, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Take a drive down South Carolina Scenic Highway 11 from Campobello, SC to Landrum SC and you will come to an intersection, a junction. Sitting on one of the corners is a rustic building with old Glory waving as you pass by. Stepping through the doors is like taking a time travel back to a simpler time when food was simple but good.  This is the restaurant review for The Junction in Landrum, SC.

This image shows the front of Junction located in Landrum SC.

We were looking for a place to eat and came upon The Junction.

The Junction is located at the intersection of South Carolina Highway 11 and South Carolina Highway 14. On this trip my family and I were heading to Cleveland, SC to visit some of South Carolina's Awesome state parks (Click here for the video of our trip). We were looking for a place to eat and came upon The Junction. We love stopping at a good country restaurant and thought we give this one a try.

This is a image of the sign in front of the Junction in Landrum, South Carolina.

As you passed through the door, the first thing you notice is the murals on the wall.

The Junction is occupying an older building that looks to have been an old general store at one time. Meanwhile, the front facade is what immediately captured my attention to the place to start with. I love the rustic faded sign that sits above the front door.

I had to give this place a try. As you pass through the door, the first thing you notice is the murals on the wall. No doubt someone in the area is very talented at painting. They stretch the full length of all the surrounding walls inside the main dining area. Painted with picturesque views of the mountains that surround The Junction.

For the most part, The Junction is a country buffet restaurant. They do have a menu you can order off of but I think most people come for the buffet. You walk in and pay as soon as you walk through the door.

Grab your plate and "filler up" with today's southern food samplings. They have the buffet line, a salad bar, and a selection of a few different types of desserts to choose from.

A sample of food from The Junction
A sample of food from The Junction

The food was really good and I have to say my favorite thing there was the chicken pot pie with the cornbread rolls coming in second. For a detailed look at the restaurant and the food they serve, click below to watch our video review of the restaurant.

If you love shopping and eating at places like this, The Shrimp Boat in Rock Hill, SC is a great choice to add to your list of places to stop at.

D'Vash Date Nectar

February 28, 2017 by Ronnie Williams 3 Comments

D'Vash Date Nectar is sweet as molasses

Disclamier: D'vash contacted us to see if we would try their product. Our purpose at Southern Food Junkie is not to tell you a product is good or bad but simply to share with you a brand you may not have heard of before.

In recent years, there have been tons of new products that have come on the scene as sugar replacements. You have agave nectar, Stevia, and Splenda just to name a few.

Most of those have advantages and disadvantages. Whether it is a bad aftertaste, or lacking in nutrition that has turned you away. Now there is a new choice on the market called D'Vash Date Nectar. (now known as Date Syrup).

Dvash Date Syrup

What is Date Nectar?

To give you some history on Date Nectar, it has been used for centuries in Middle Eastern Countries. Some also believe that one of the references to honey mentioned in the bible is Date Nectar.

The scripture I am referring to is, "So I have come down to rescue them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey-the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Hebusties (Exodus 3:8, KJV)."

It is said that they were actually talking about date honey and not bee honey in this specific scripture. Other mentions of honey may have been speaking about actual bee honey.

D'Vash Date Nectar in Straws
D'Vash Date Nectar in Straws

What does it taste like?

The sample I received from D'Vash Date Nectar was packaged in straws. I have seen honey packaged this way in order to eat it as a snack.

Upon opening the straw you could smell the nectar. It has a strong molasses-like smell to it. When I tasted it, again, it has a molasses-like flavor. You still taste the date flavor in it too.

D'Vash Date Nectar does have a saltiness to it that you can taste, but it doesn't overpower the sweetness. It was very good just to eat plain. Very sweet but not overly sweet.

D'vash Date Nectar

What can you eat D'Vash Date Nectar On?

I tried it on some toast with peanut butter on it. The flavors married well with the peanut butter. I would like to try it as a pancake syrup too. I feel that would make an awesome syrup.

The next thing to do with D'Vash Date Nectar is to try it in a recipe. There are a few Southern recipes that I want to try but the one thing that comes to mind is Molasses cookies.

A few of my favorite foods to use D'Vash Date Syrup in oatmeal and to use as a sweetener in my coffee.

One time I made homemade ice cream with it and it was so good. I used Date Syrup to replace some of the sugar in the recipe. It reminded me of Chocolate Icecream.

Other products they make

Since coming out with Date Syrup, D'Vash has launched a few other products such as:

  • Granulated Date Sugar
  • Whole dates
  • Date Energy bars
  • Superfood Bites (my favorite)

Mama's Farmhouse Pigeon Forge, TN

February 23, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Mama's Farmhouse stands as a culinary gem that beckons diners with the promise of Southern comfort and hospitality. In a region known for its rich culinary traditions, Mama's Farmhouse has carved out its special place, offering a warm and inviting haven where the flavors of the South are celebrated with every mouthwatering bite.

Farm Appearance of Mama's Farmhouse

Join us as we embark on a gastronomic journey through the heartwarming dishes and charming ambiance of Mama's Farmhouse in this review, where we explore the essence of true Southern cuisine in the heart of the Smoky Mountains.

Mama's Farmhouse Breakfast Takes You Back to Simpler Times

Growing up in the South, a traditional breakfast consisted of grits, eggs, bacon, and some type of bread. Most Southerners would have biscuits as their choice of bread if you asked them.

Mama's Farmhouse in Pigeon Forge, TN.
Flowers to brighten your day

We love our breakfast and consider it to be the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast, especially Sunday breakfast, is almost like a holiday for Southerners. If asked, most Southerners would tell you that they love their mama or grandmama's cooking. So it is no surprise to find a restaurant in the hills of the Smoky Mountains honoring their Mother.

Atmosphere at Mama's Farmhouse

I enjoyed the atmosphere here at Mama's Farmhouse. Everything from how the servers were dressed to the attention to the detail on the outside of the building. The owners put a lot of care and thought to make it resemble an old farm.

The restaurant itself is not a franchise, but it is not like your mom-and-pop kind of restaurant either. It is more of a small chain of restaurants. The owners of this restaurant own a few other restaurants in the area.

Similarly, it should be mentioned that they provided lots of support in terms of food and money for the firefighters who were battling wildfires in Gatlinburg, TN. I am sure they do not want the recognition but thought it was fitting to mention it. I like to support owners like this. It is the American way.

Mama's Farmhouse is a Family-style Restaurant

Mama's Farmhouse is a country restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You pay one price and they have one menu with several things on the menu.

The menu at Mama's Farmhouse

They bring a little bit of all of the food on the menu out to the table. We refer to this as family-style serving. It is all you can eat but you do not stand in line to get your food.

When you run out, just ask the waiter or waitress for more, and like magic, it appears on your table. This restaurant is similar to the Dan'l Boone Inn we reviewed last year in Boone, NC. They both are similar in style and the way the food is served.

The Food at Mama's Farmhouse in Pigeon Forge

Now on to the food. The food, for the most part, was pretty good. You can just tell the difference between food that was cooked from a mom-and-pop type place to a corporate-owned restaurant.

They start you out with these pinwheel pastries. I must say, they were excellent. Similarly, I loved the strawberry butter that comes out with them.

One of the things that I would say was lacking was the grits. You just do not mess up a Southerner's grits. They were a little too thin for my liking and underseasoned. I like to cook my grits thick and creamy.

Of course, food is very subjective as some like their grits thin, but I particularly do not. Everything else was pretty much on par.

Comparison

If I had to compare this restaurant to one in the area, I would say it compares to the Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant just up the road. We did enjoy our breakfast at Mama's Farmhouse and will be back. Sometimes it is hard to find cons when doing a review so you have to be nitpicky.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Mama's Farmhouse in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is a culinary haven that effortlessly captures the essence of Southern hospitality and cuisine. From the moment you step through the door, you are welcomed with open arms and treated to a dining experience that feels like a warm embrace from Mama herself.

The menu, laden with classic Southern staples, pays homage to the region's rich culinary heritage. Each dish is a testament to the time-honored recipes and traditional flavors that have been passed down through generations.

The family-style dining approach fosters a sense of togetherness and conviviality that is truly heartwarming. It's the kind of place where strangers become friends over shared platters of delicious food, and laughter fills the air as diners savor every bite.

Disclaimer: Tower Root Beer was gracious enough to send their product to us to try. Our purpose at Southern Food Junkie is not to tell you a product is good or bad but simply to share with you a brand you may not have heard of before.

Tower Root Beer proudly presents a collection of handpicked, crowd-pleasing beverages that are sure to tantalize your taste buds! This curated category features a diverse assortment of delightful culinary creations sourced from various origins.

From innovative dishes crafted by our team to cherished family recipes passed down through generations, each recipe is a testament to our passion for exquisite flavors. Drawing inspiration from memorable dining experiences at renowned restaurants, we have carefully selected a range of recipes to satisfy every palate.

Traditionally, Root Beer was made with Sassafras root, Wintergreen, Vanilla, Licorice root, and Anise. Sassafras root was banned by the US Food and Drug Administration some time back and now most root beers use artificial flavoring.

Tower Root Beer the Unofficial root beer of the New England Patriots

Tower Root Beer is located in Boston, Massachusetts. Since this is the case, I am calling Tower Root Beer the Unofficial root beer of the New England Patriots. According to their website, Tower Root Beer did not start out making Root Beer.

Their first soda was ginger ale. It was not till later on that the company decided to concentrate its efforts on making this specialized drink, root beer. It is a good thing they did because they sure are good at it.

Root Beer

Root Beer is one of my all-time favorite sodas to taste. I love this Tower Root Beer but I also love a few others as well. Maine Root is also a great one to try as well as Boylan.

Conclusion

In summary, Tower Root Beer is a great-tasting root beer. It has a clean finish with no chemical aftertaste. The carbonation is just right and it goes down without a lot of burn going down.

If you have not tried Tower Root Beer, I say what are you waiting for? It is widely sold in MA and NH and there are a few distributors that are selling it in other states. Also, make sure you watch our video on Tower Root Beer below.

Park Place Restaurant Pineville, NC

January 31, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

A few months ago I was out with my family and we were in search of a place to eat for dinner. What we wanted was something quick and cheap, so we decided on Showmars in Pineville, NC. Meanwhile, we passed right by a diner that looked like a local establishment. It looked like a place I would love to try. That place was Park Place Restaurant in Pineville, NC.

This is a image of the building and sign from Park Place Restaurant in Pineville, NC.

About Park Place Restaurant in Pineville, NC

Park Place Restaurant is an American, Greek-inspired diner that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They specialize in southern comfort food and boy are they good at it.

Park Place is located just outside Charlotte, NC city limits on Park Rd. It is located adjacent to CMC-Pineville Hospital. Park Place is tucked back off a pretty busy road. When I got there it was full of patrons ready to get a taste of Greek-inspired comfort food.

What I ordered at Park Place Restaurant

Finally, I made it inside and I was immediately seated. You could tell that there was special detail paid to get you seated quickly. Next, I placed my order of Chicken Tips over rice, a side of turnip greens, and a side salad.

Now the wait was on. To my surprise, they brought out a delicious cup of barley soup as a starter. Moreover, what surprised me, even more, was how fast my entree came out.

This imaage shows a plate with a dish of chicken tips over yellow rice covered in brown gravy with a side of collard greens from park place restaurant in Pineville, NC.
Chicken Tips over Rice with a side of Turnip Greens

The first thing that I noticed when the dish came out was how similar it was to the one I had at Nishie G's Cafe. However, Park Place Restaurant's version had gravy and it was delicious. Next, the turnip greens were seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was a great experience all the way around.

In conclusion, the food was great, the wait staff was very nice and attentive, and the food was very reasonably priced. I would not be scared to recommend it to anyone. I can't wait to go back to try their breakfast someday. In any case, make sure if you are in the area you try them out. Also, watch our video below to see our experience with Park Place Restaurant.

Double Cola and Ski Soda Review

January 26, 2017 by Ronnie Williams 4 Comments

Disclaimer: Double Cola sent us a few samples to try in return for our honest review. Our purpose at Southern Food Junkie is not to tell you a product is good or bad but simply to share with you a brand you may not have heard of before.

It seems like the late 1800s and early 1900s were booming times for soda. Equally important is nearly all of the sodas created at that time were created in the South. The South has contributed many unique foods, snacks, and drinks throughout the years so it is no surprise that after all these years the South is still the King of Sodas. One Soda company that is still making awesome soda from that era is Double Cola Company.

Double Cola got its start in 1933 in Chattanooga, Tennessee but according to their website, their history starts a decade earlier than that.

In 1922 The Good Grape company was formed to market their Grape soda. It was not till a few years later that they developed their cola recipe.

The company has changed hands a few times throughout the years but its legendary taste has stayed true to its roots. Along the way, they added a few different flavored sodas but one has stuck and developed a huge following, Ski Soda.

Ski Soda is a citrus-flavored soda with the two main flavorings being lemon and orange. This combination creates a unique taste not seen in any other soda on the market today.

Ski Soda Photo from Double Cola Company Website

The lemon and orange offer a unique flavor combination in a soda with light carbonation. Some would even say it tastes a little on the flat side but I would not say that it was a bad thing.

Ski soda is not too sweet, especially when compared to other citrus sodas like Mountain Dew or Mello Yellow.

If I had to compare it to another soda I would say it was closest to Mello Yellow but still had its unique flavor. This is why Ski Soda is so popular in its market in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Double Cola has a unique cola flavor that is different from Pepsi or Coke. Double Cola was not as sweet as Pepsi and in my opinion, was more comparable to Coke.

If you loved trying these two sodas, check out Stubborn Soda Black Cherry with tarragon. It is a solid choice as well.

Photo from Double Cola Company Website

I tend to like Coke better myself and enjoy this cola. It has moderate carbonation which I tend to also like.

I particularly do not like a cola that burns going down. An example of this would be some of the store brand colas like Sam Cola. Whew, that stuff burns.

As always we want to think The Double Cola company for sending us these samples to try. Also, want to think our Audience for your support. We couldn't do it without both of you.

Shrimp Boat Rock Hill, SC

January 18, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

It is funny to see a tagline from a company whose name is Shrimp Boat but claims there is not any chicken like Shrimp Boat chicken. Today we stopped by the Shrimp Boat in Rock Hill, SC located on S. Heckle Blvd to see if the claim is true. This is the review of Shrimp Boat Rock Hill SC.

This picture shows the outside of the building at Shrimp Boat in Rock Hill, SC.
Exterior view of Shrimp Boat

History of The Shrimp Boat in Rock Hill, SC

The Shrimp Boat has been serving the Rock Hill, SC area since 1964. Originally part of a franchise dating back to the 1960s, it is now independently owned and operated. There are two stores in the Rock Hill area and one that is separately owned in nearby Lancaster, SC. You can read more about the history of the Shrimp Boat from my friends at Marie, Let's Eat!

Shrimp Boat Rock Hill, SC

Furthermore, they have done a lot of research on the history of this franchise and it would be a discredit to not showcase their work! After all, I am here to share with you the food from these awesome places but I do like to give a brief history of its existence if I can find it.

The Shrimp Boat is a Casual Dining Restaurant

As you walk in the door, you place your order for your food. You take your seat and they bring it out to you. The food is cooked to order which separates it from fast food that may be cooked and sit under heat lamps for a while.

Shrimp Boat

The restaurant is always clean and the people working are friendly. When I used to work on alarm systems I frequently visited the area restaurants. Shrimp Boat was one of the cleanest I have ever been in, especially for the age of the place. There was always someone in the back mopping and cleaning. Additionally, I have been to other restaurants in the Rock Hill area where the floors were so greasy that you could barely stand.

The Food at the Shrimp Boat in Rock Hill

The Shrimp Boat brings their food out piping hot. On this occasion, I ordered their chicken tenders. The meat was tender, moist, and succulent. It had an excellent crust that just crumbles in your mouth. I love their fries which are crinkle-cut fries. Even though the fries are most likely pre-frozen, and not cut fresh, they are still delicious. They are cooked to perfection just the way I like.

Shrimp Boat Chicken Tender Plate with Fries
Adding Texas Pete to my Lunch Special Chicken Tender Plate w/ Fries

In fact, they have even started adding a little seasoning salt which I believe is an awesome touch.  All in all, this is some of the best chicken I have ever had. I would rank it near the top of my list. One of these days I will bring myself to try their calabash shrimp or that awesome-looking chuckwagon sandwich.

Conclusion

Wow, that was a great review. I loved doing this one. I hope you enjoyed it too. Stubborn Soda Black Cherry with Tarragon Flavor

January 12, 2017 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Come with us as we embark on a flavor journey with our exploration of Stubborn Soda's Black Cherry Tarragon. In this detailed review, we dive into the distinctive combination of black cherry and tarragon, unraveling the unique taste experience that sets this soda apart. Join us as we sip, savor, and discover the intriguing blend that elevates the traditional soda experience. Get ready to quench your thirst for bold and innovative flavors!

Stubborn Soda Black Cherry with Tarragon

Hooked on Soda

Ever since that first sip of ice-cold soda, people have been hooked on it. Soda is fizzy, sweet, bubbly, and refreshing. People love soda and it is evident by how much the two big ones, Coke and Pepsi sell.

Now soda is like fast food or other sweets, it is meant to be enjoyed on occasion and not an everyday thing. Most of the big companies have resulted in using cheaper ingredients like high fructose corn syrup which is not as good for you.

Meanwhile, there are a plethora of craft sodas that are popping up that offer better ingredients like real cane sugar and no artificial flavors. This week we are reviewing Stubborn Soda Black Cherry with Tarragon Flavor.

Stubborn Soda's Black Cherry Flavor Reminds me of Cheerwine

I love Cheerwine, it is one of my favorite sodas. Cheerwine is a small soda company based in NC. Cheerwine is Black Cherry flavored also. When I saw Stubborn Soda Black Cherry with Tarragon flavor I thought I had to try it because it sounded similar to Cheerwine.

Stubborn Soda is owned by a company in Ireland but is Based in Florida. They use no artificial sweeteners, no high fructose corn syrup, and use natural flavors. I guess if soda was good for you or better for you this would be the one to drink.

Unlocking the Distinctive Flavors of Stubborn Soda's Black Cherry Tarragon

My initial thoughts on Stubborn Soda Black Cherry with Tarragon flavor is it's nowhere as sweet as other comparable sodas. I like this fact too.

For the whole bottle, it has around 24 grams of sugar. On the other hand, most mainstream sodas have around 34 grams for 8 oz. serving. In my opinion, all companies need to cut back on the sugar.

Stubborn Black Cherry Soda is Light On The Flavor

The flavor does not pop as much as Cheerwine, but that doesn't mean it is not good. You can taste more of the soda water and the flavor doesn't linger long on the tongue, which is more than likely by design since they want to keep you coming back for more.

Stubborn Soda Black Cherry with Tarrogon
Stubborn Soda Black Cherry with Tarragon

Flavor designers can control how long a flavor lingers on the tongue which makes you crave more of a product to achieve the same taste.

The Tarragon Flavoring

The Tarragon flavor was faint and I could barely taste it. I thought it was an odd choice to have as a soda flavoring. The reason is most people use Tarragon as a herb when cooking fish or chicken.

I did some research and found that some countries do use it as a soda flavoring, most notably in Russia. The anise-like flavor is added to the Russian drink and is most like our version of Ginger Ale.

If you enjoyed this post about Stubborn Soda, I think you will love the one about Double Cola and Ski Soda!

Conclusion

In closing, If you see Stubborn Soda in the store you should give it a try. It is better for you than most mainstream sodas because of the natural ingredients and it has half the sugar.

Our journey into the world of Stubborn Soda's Black Cherry Tarragon has been a flavorful exploration of craft soda excellence. From the fizzy, sweet allure reminiscent of traditional sodas to the innovative use of real cane sugar and the absence of artificial flavors, this soda stands out in the crowd.

As we bid farewell to the effervescent experience, it's clear that the resurgence of craft sodas offers a refreshing alternative for those seeking a higher-quality beverage. Cheers to the delightful departure from the ordinary! 🥤🍒

Homemade White Bread in the Bread Machine

December 31, 2016 by Ronnie Williams 6 Comments

White bread is a staple in most homes in today's modern era. While it may not be the healthiest of bread choices, it is one of the tastiest. Making homemade bread is so easy with this tried and proven recipe for how to make homemade white bread in the bread machine.

What white bread lacks in nutritional depth, it makes up in flavor. Just like your favorite desserts, it is nice to splurge once in a while on a favorite treat.

Bread Machine White Bread

It does not have to be a burden or struggle to make homemade white bread. With the invention of the bread machine, it is easier now than ever before. Today we are sharing our favorite Homemade White Bread in a bread machine.

A few years back I was given a Bread Machine as a Christmas present. I love homemade bread but did not always have the time to make it, so I asked for a bread machine for Christmas.

Bread Machine Settings
Bread Machine Settings

Of course, I tried the recipes that came in the recipe book with the machine, but they left me wanting more. That is when my search sent me to the internet and I found Ron's White Bread recipe.

I tried it a few times and tweaked it a little to suit my needs. That is where this recipe comes into play. This bread is full of flavor and light and airy. Perfect for sandwiches, grilled cheeses, and the best French toast you have ever had.

In this post, I  will give you step by step process on how to make the perfect Homemade White Bread in a bread machine. I am sure this homemade bread will become a household favorite as it is in mine. Please share this recipe with your friends and family.

This image shows the completed Bread Machine White Bread recipe.
Yield: 1 Loaf

Bread Machine White Bread

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 7 minutes

Try this easy to make Bread Machine White Bread. I have tried them all and this is the best one. Adopted from Ron's White Bread Recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup water
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 2 tablespoon Dry Milk
  • 2 tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil, You can use whichever oil you like, I prefer Olive Oil.
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 2 Cups Bread Flour
  • 1 Cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons of Bread Machine Yeast or quick rise yeast

Instructions

  1. Add the ingredients to the bread pan the way they are listed from first to last. Your yeast should be sitting on top of the flour. To add to the flavor, you can add a few pats of butter on top of the flour also.
  2. Put the bread pan in the bread machine and use setting number 1 with a loaf size 1 to 1.5lbs and a medium crust.
  3. Once the bread is almost done, check for internal temperature with an instant-read thermometer
  4. Once it reaches 190 degrees internal temperature, remove the bread pan. Even a few degrees over can be bad. It will cause your bread to dry out faster so do not skip this step.
  5. Remove bread from the pan immediately and place bread on a cooling rack.
  6. Allow bread to come to room temperature before slicing or storing.

Notes

You may have to open the lid on your bread machine when it first starts to mix and scrape the sides. If the dough appears dry and crumbly, add water slowly a teaspoon at a time until it forms a nice smooth ball. If it is sticky, add a teaspoon of flour until dough forms a nice smooth ball. Most bread machines offer a period during the rising stage where you can add dry ingredients such as poppy seeds, nuts, chia seeds, or any other type of seeds and nuts. This is a great option to fortify your bread.

Palmetto Cheese

December 30, 2016 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: This product was provided by the manufacturer to give our honest opinion on. For a full product information policy click here.

I grew up on pimento cheese. It is cheap and makes great sandwiches. I came across a brand that I had never tried before so I decided to give it a go. Wow! This was the best store-bought pimento cheese I have ever had. This is a review of Palmetto Cheese, made right here in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

Palmetto Cheese
The South's Best Pimento Cheese

What is pimento cheese?

Some of you may be wondering what exactly is pimento cheese. Pimento cheese is a blend of cheese, usually a sharp cheddar combined with mayonnaise and pimento peppers.

Of Course, the type of mayonnaise used contributes to the different tastes achieved. Depending on the area it could be Duke's mayonnaise, which most Southerners use, or Hellman's mayonnaise.

Palmetto Cheese
Creamy, Cheesy, Palmetto cheese

What sets most pimento cheese recipes apart is the spices that are used in them. Everyone has their secret spice they like to add to them.

As stated above, this can vary from area to area of the south, but at the core, the ingredients listed above are the basics.

So why is this considered a Southern food then?

The history of pimento cheese is slightly cloudy. The research I have done has pointed it to originating from up North.

So why is this considered a Southern food then? First, pimento peppers were rare and expensive because they were imported.

The South's weather was the perfect environment to grow them so once they started growing them here in the South the pimento cheese spread was adopted as a Southern favorite.

Why Palmetto Cheese instead of pimento cheese?

So, some of you may be wondering why this product is called Palmetto Cheese vs pimento cheese. Palmetto Cheese gets its name ironically, from the nickname of the state of South Carolina, The Palmetto State. Palmetto Cheese is made in Pawley's Island, SC.

It can be used in many ways

All things considered, pimento cheese might be one of the Southerner's favorite snack foods. It can be used in many ways. For instance, some people make sandwiches from it.

You can top a burger with it or make a grilled cheese with it. You can use Pimento cheese as a dip for crackers as well.

In addition, another way you can use it is to mix it into other recipes, such as this sausage balls recipe or even grits!

If you are not from the South, you may not know about grits or what they are. We can show you How To Cook Grits the way we do and I think you will love them.

Palmetto Cheese has gained a following

Palmetto cheese is so good that it has gained a following of its own. It is now showing up in all sorts of recipes from the South up north. According to their website, "it is sold in over 10,000 locations across the United States now."

Furthermore, If your grocery store does not have it you can ask them to get it or have Pawleys Island Specialty Foods ship it to you. Finally, make sure you watch the video below to see my taste test with the kids and me.

Southern Cornbread Dressing

November 21, 2016 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Southern cornbread dressing is a traditional dish that is often served during holidays and special occasions in the Southern United States.

This savory dish consists of crumbled cornbread mixed with various seasonings, vegetables, and sometimes meats, then baked until golden brown. It is a staple of Southern cuisine and has been passed down through generations, with each family adding their own unique twist to the recipe.

Southern cornbread dressing is a comforting and delicious dish that has become a symbol of Southern hospitality and tradition and this recipe was shared with us from our dear friend at Julia's Simply Southern.

Southern Cornbread Dressing Verses Stuffing

The terms "dressing" and "stuffing" are often used interchangeably, but there are some regional and traditional differences between Southern-style cornbread dressing and stuffing:

  1. Location and Terminology:
    • Dressing: This term is more commonly used in the Southern United States to describe a side dish made from cornbread or bread crumbs, usually cooked outside the turkey or other poultry.
    • Stuffing: This term is often used in the Northern United States and other regions to describe a mixture that is placed inside the cavity of a turkey or other poultry before roasting. However, it can also refer to a similar mixture baked in a separate dish.
  2. Ingredients:
    • Southern-style Cornbread Dressing: As the name suggests, this dressing typically features cornbread as its base. It often includes ingredients like sautéed onions, celery, and bell peppers (the "holy trinity" of Southern cooking), along with seasonings, broth, and additional ingredients like sausage, giblets, or hard-boiled eggs for flavor and texture.
    • Stuffing: Stuffing can vary widely in terms of ingredients. It may use white bread or other types of bread as the base and can include ingredients like onions, celery, herbs, and occasionally fruits or nuts. The exact ingredients used can differ based on regional and personal preferences.
  3. Cooking Method:
    • Southern-style Cornbread Dressing: This dressing is typically baked in a casserole dish or cast-iron skillet, either as a standalone side dish or as a complement to roasted poultry. It usually has a slightly crispy top layer.
    • Stuffing: Stuffing, when used to stuff a turkey, is cooked inside the bird during roasting. The juices from the turkey can infuse the stuffing with flavor. However, there are also recipes for "stuffing" that are baked separately from the turkey.
  4. Flavor Profile:
    • Southern-style Cornbread Dressing: Southern dressing tends to have a savory and rich flavor profile, often featuring a blend of herbs and spices to complement the cornbread base.
    • Stuffing: Stuffing can vary in flavor depending on the ingredients used, but it may lean more towards a neutral or herby taste, depending on regional preferences.

I’m not only going to give you my dressing recipe, I’m going to give you three just in time for Thanksgiving! My regular recipe, a shortcut version, and a version in case you don’t have to feed a crowd.

Make the cornbread Ahead of time

Anytime I am going to make Southern Cornbread dressing, I always make the cornbread the day before. By doing this, I save myself some time and frustration of trying to make it all on the same day.

Also, typically when I am making cornbread, I am concerned with it drying out, if you are too, I have some tips and tricks to help with that. In this particular case, you do not have to worry about it since using stale bread and cornbread actually makes this recipe better.

How often do you need to season a cast iron skillet?

When I make cornbread, I love to bake it in my cast iron skillets. If you did not already know this, southern-style cornbread is typically cooked in a cast iron skillet to give it a nice crunchy crust. This will help with the texture of the southern cornbread dressing as well.

How to make Southern Cornbread Dressing

Ingredients:

  • 8 Slices White Bread - Cubed and Toasted lightly
  • 1 Sleeve of Butter Crackers - crumbled (optional)
  • 1 Cake of Cornbread (recipe follows)
  • 2 Cups of Chopped Celery
  • 1 Large Onion - Chopped
  • 2 Boiled Eggs - Diced
  • 1 Stick of Butter
  • 7-8 Cups of Chicken Stock (NOT Broth)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Sage
  • 1 tbs poultry seasoning
  • 6 Eggs Beaten Lightly

How to make it

  • Start by cubing and toasting 8 slices of white bread. Add to a large mixing bowl and crumble in 1 sleeve of butter crackers (optional).
  • Cut the cornbread into cubes and add to the bowl. (Make the cornbread the day before to use when needed to save yourself some time)
  • Dice celery and onion and add to a skillet with 1 stick of butter and cook over medium heat until the vegetables are soft and translucent. Pour the bread into the mixing bowl.
  • Add half of the chicken stock and stir to combine. This will begin to break down the bread cubes.
  • Add the cubed-boiled eggs and the beaten eggs. Stir to combine well adding the remaining chicken broth.
  • Add seasonings and continue to stir until everything is combined.
  • Bake 350 degrees for 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on desired firmness. Some people like a moist loose dressing and others prefer it baked a bit firmer.

Pro Tip: I always make up the dressing batter the day before and store it in the refrigerator. On turkey day, give the batter a stir, pour it into your baking dish, and bake. This saves you a lot of time on Thanksgiving Day.

Nishie G's Cafe Rock Hill, SC

November 17, 2016 by Ronnie Williams 3 Comments

Nishie G's Cafe is serving up Greek Southern comfort food.

This week we are back with a local restaurant in Rock Hill, SC. A Southern Greek-inspired restaurant that has been serving Rock Hill for the past decade. What makes them so good is that it is fresh, friendly, and quick. This is a sit-down dinner with the convenience of fast food. Join us as we tour Nishie G's Cafe in Rock Hill, SC.

Nishie G's Serves Greek Inspired Southern Comfort Food

Nishie G's Cafe is serving up awesome comfort food like fried chicken, hamburger steak, mac and cheese, and green beans. They also have Greek-inspired dishes like grilled chicken pita, gyros, and Souvlaki.

What is even more interesting is the fact that they are serving breakfast. They have been featured in USA Today and Southern Living for their breakfast menu.

After ordering my meal, I sat down in a corner booth so I could get a good angle of the restaurant. It is the one o'clock hour so the first rush of customers has come through. We are now on the smaller wave of customers. The restaurant is now slightly crowded but not as much as if I was there around twelve.

What I Ordered at Nishie G's Cafe

I ordered the marinated chicken tips with grilled peppers and onions over rice. It came with two sides and I chose mac and cheese and green beans. The food was delicious and came out pretty quickly. The staff was friendly which is always something I look for.

This is not my last time visiting Nishie G's Cafe.

Canyons Restaurant Blowing Rock, NC

November 10, 2016 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Notice: Canyons Restaurant in Blowing Rock, NC has permanently closed.

Our last stop on our trip to Boone, NC lead us to a unique place. We passed by this place last year and we simply ran out of time to stop. I promised myself I would stop the next time I was in the area. The main drawing point was the views I could see from the road. I had to get a closer look. This is Canyons Restaurant in Blowing Rock, NC.

"What caught my eye on the menu was the mention of a sign that use to stand out front that read "Chicken, Dumplings, and Bait.""

Located just near the entrance to The Blowing Rock, Canyons is hanging off the side of a cliff overlooking a deep gorge facing Grandfather mountain. According to the menu Canyons been many things over the years including many restaurants, a dollar store, a few roadside bars, and even played a part in the great moonshine runs back during prohibition.

What caught my eye on the menu was the mention of a sign that use to stand out front that read "Chicken, Dumplings, and Bait. That says it all there.

"The parking lot was full with more cars trying to find a place to park."

The menu at Canyons Restaurant is as diverse as the many businesses that have graced its walls. The menu ranges from Mexican or South Western dishes to breakfast. There is even a Duck Burger on the menu. The parking lot was full with more cars trying to find a place to park.

The place was packed for Sunday Brunch, which appears to be a favorite time to come to the restaurant.

We enjoyed the views and the atmosphere. There was live music going although it was a little too loud at the time but would not keep me from coming back. We really enjoyed our visit here and cannot wait to visit again. Watch our video below for the full review.

Reese's Butter Cups with Pieces

November 9, 2016 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

Every once in a while a company comes out with a new product that gets everyone excited about it. I can imagine the excitement when the first computer came out, or the first generation iPhone, Crystal Pepsi, and the list goes on and on.

Well, Hersey's blew the top off with their new candy, Reese's Pieces Butter Cups. You read that right folks. Reese's Butter Cups stuffed with Reese's Pieces.

What is on the Inside of Reese's Butter Cup with Pieces

The first thing we did was cut them open to see what they looked like on the inside. The very first thing I notice as the knife is closing down is the crunch. You can feel the candy shells crunching under the force of the knife.

Once it is opened, you can see the shells on the inside. The next thing I noticed is the peanut butter on the inside of the shells is the same as the peanut butter in the cups.

The difference to me has always been that Reese's Butter Cups are not as sweet and have a little more peanut butter texture to them. The peanut butter in the Reese's pieces has a smoother texture and sweeter taste.

That could be attributed to the candy shell though. Since they are combined in one, they seem to have the same texture leaning more toward the Reese's Pieces.

The first bite

Once we bit into Reese's Pieces Butter Cups, we noticed that same crunch that we could hear as the knife was cutting them in half. Otherwise, they are much the same as the previous Reese's Butter Cups.

They are still the same Reese's Butter Cups that we all have grown to love. Watch our video below to get a sense of what they look and taste like. Take a test drive yourself and let us know what you think of them.

Dan’l Boone Inn: Family-Style Southern Cooking in Boone, NC

November 3, 2016 by Ronnie Williams 1 Comment

Boone, NC, is a town filled with folklore as tall as the mountains that surround it. Boone got its name from the famous American pioneer Daniel Boone, who is said to have frequently camped in the area while passing through.

Dan'l Boone Inn in Boone, North Carolina front entrance.

Located right in the heart of town is a restaurant serving up country ham biscuits that may one day add to Boone’s own folklore. That restaurant is the Dan’l Boone Inn, located in Downtown Boone, NC.

The landscaping that adorns the property always has something blooming in season. Once you set foot on the grounds, it feels like you’ve stepped back in time — to a time when life was simple, and food was fresh from the garden.

Located in The Heart of Boone, NC

The restaurant sits at a busy intersection in Boone, NC, but once you’re on the property, none of that seems to matter. Everything beyond the gates fades away.

Housed in one of Boone’s oldest buildings, the Dan’l Boone Inn offers a comforting escape from the busy world outside. It’s the kind of place that feels welcoming the moment you arrive.

While you’re in the area, make sure to save some time to visit Ashe County Cheese, located just a short drive away in West Jefferson, NC.

The Food Is Served Family Style

Everything they make is brought straight to the table, and if you want more of something, just ask your server. Yes — that includes dessert.

All of the food here is fantastic, but the country ham biscuits are my personal favorite. You know a Southern boy loves his biscuits.

If I had to compare Dan’l Boone Inn to another restaurant, I’d say it’s similar to Mama’s Farmhouse in Pigeon Forge, TN, or the Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant in Sevierville, TN. If you’ve eaten at either of those, you know exactly the style of food and experience you’re getting here.

What's on the menu

Dan’l Boone Inn serves both breakfast and dinner, and both meals are served family style. They bring the full spread to the table so you can try a little bit of everything.

We have all heard the tagline, "You can't eat just one." Maybe it is true about potato chips. They are very hard to stop eating once you put one away. Well, Frito-Lay has stepped up the game on this one. They have combined the flavor of biscuits and sausage gravy on their potato chips. This is a review of Lay's Southern Biscuits and Gravy-flavored potato chips.

Why Make Southern Biscuits and Gravy Flavor?

Last year Frito-Lay ran a campaign called "Do Us a Flavor." This is where you can come up with what you would think would be an awesome new chip flavor.

This was the company's third year doing this contest (2015), and this year may have produced the best one yet, Southern Biscuits and Gravy flavored chips. While it is yet to be seen if this will be a staple flavor for Lay's Potato chips, this is a great flavor to try out.

Do they taste like Southern Biscuits and Gravy?

I was very surprised how Lays captured the taste of real Southern Biscuits and Gravy in a potato chip. Being a Southern boy, I happened to love Biscuits and sausage gravy and I make it quite often at my house. I have my very own recipe as well if you would love to try it out. I think Lays did an awesome job capturing the flavor in these chips!

For now, we shall call it a novelty flavor. More than ever companies are always trying to gain an edge on their competition by creating unique, different, and sometimes weird flavor combinations and It looks like Lay's knows the way to a southern man's heart.

For now, the flavor has been discontinued, but maybe together we can change that! If you think Lay's should bring this flavor back, reach out to Lay's and send them a message requesting to bring back this awesome flavor.

Sunny Rock Eggs And Things Blowing Rock, NC

October 27, 2016 by Ronnie Williams 3 Comments

Updated Feb. 8, 2023, According to Sunny Rock Eggs and Things Website, this restaurant is Permanently Closed due to retirement. Sad to see this. It is for sale and hopefully, someone will reopen it. Foggy Rock, the sister restaurant that shares the same parking lot is still open.

This week on southern food junkie we continue with the restaurant reviews from our trip to Boone, NC. While out of town one of my favorite things to do is find an awesome breakfast place. I spotted this place about a year ago while visiting the area and thought I needed to try it. So naturally, when we visited this year I told my wife that we needed to eat at Sunny Rock in Blowing Rock, NC.

There Were Two Restaurants

The first thing I notice when pulling into the drive is how small the parking lot is. It was crowded this morning, so I saw a sign that said that the neighboring restaurant shares a parking lot.

After pulling into that parking lot I notice that the names are similar. Foggy Rock and Sunny Rock are the names of the two restaurants. They are sister restaurants beside each other. How cool is that? Both are nice looking and Sunny Rock mainly serves breakfast, which is what we were after.

Our First Impressions

We put our names on the list and waited for them to call out " Williams Party of 5" to be seated. After being seated we ordered our drinks.

The waitress was as sweet as could be. She brought our drinks out and then got our order. I ordered the omelet titled "Hunger Pains". After our drinks came out, I took a sip of the coffee, wow, this is great I thought. The coffee was some of the best I have ever had at a restaurant!

Right now on Trip Advisor, Sunny Rock is ranked #8 out of 31 restaurants in Blowing Rock, NC. That is pretty good but I believe they deserve better than that! Make sure you rank them after your visit as this will help their ranking.

How We Liked It

We enjoyed our visit to Sunny Rock Eggs and Things. The food was awesome, the staff was friendly, and even the owner came out and spoke to us.

We will be back next time we are in the area. Give them a try if you are in the area too. Let them know that you saw this post and video. Also, do not forget to check out the rest of our videos on YouTube and subscribe to our channel.

Jersey Mike's #16 Chicken Philly Sandwich

October 25, 2016 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

In the last episode of Southern Food Junkie where we stopped by a franchise restaurant, I mentioned how I love to eat at sandwich shops for lunch. I guess I am like other people and I have my favorite thing to eat at each place I go. When I go to Jersey Mike's Sub shop it has to be the #16 Chicken Philly sandwich.

There are many things that I love about this sandwich but I would say the main thing is the creamy cheese that is on it.

I also love how the thin meat gets caramelized from the griddle that they cook it on. The peppers they use are also so good.

I overheard one employee talking the other week about the peppers they use. He has said that they were marinated. He also said that there were jalapeno peppers in the mix.

I do see red, orange, and green bell peppers but no jalapenos. Either way, I can tell they taste different than regular bell peppers so we will go along with the marinated version. Either way, they are great.

According to their website, Jersey Mike's started in 1959. It was a regular mom-and-pop shop at that time. It wasn't until 1971 when a young man by the name of Peter Cancro started working there that the shop took a turn.

He overheard the owner saying that he wanted to sell the business. He borrowed the money from his high school football coach and at the ripe age of 17, he bought it. It is from these humble beginnings that Jersey Mike's was formed.

If you love eating at Sandwich shops, another one of my favorites is Firehouse Subs.

Our Daily Bread Boone, NC | Southern Food Junkie

October 20, 2016 by Ronnie Williams 1 Comment

Give us this day our daily bread

On this episode of Southern Food Junkie we stop by a local sandwich shop in Downtown Boone, North Carolina. Our Daily Bread is making sandwiches, salads, and soups the right way.

They source as much of their local ingredients as possible. Their bread is fresh baked from another local business, Stick Boy Bread Company.  By doing this they not only provide the absolute freshest and tastiest food possible, but they also help support the local economy.

The atmosphere at Our Daily Bread is that of a college town, but college students are not the only one patronizing this shop. While there I noticed many families, friends, and couples enjoying food over conversations.

The romantic charm of the building and golden glows from the lights sets the perfect atmosphere for a dinner date.

While here I enjoyed a few of different sandwiches choices as someone with kids often has the opportunity to sample their kid’s leftovers. The sandwiches were so huge that even my wife had almost a half of sandwich left, to which I tried also.

All the food was very, very good. Although the sandwiches were out of this world, my favorite would have to be their desserts. After our sandwiches we split two dessert offerings, the chocolate cake and peanut butter and chocolate chip cheese cake.

Both were simply delicious.  When you visit make sure you save room for the dessert, you will not be sorry.

Make sure next time you are in the Boone, North Carolina area you give Our Daily Bread a shot. I think you will be completely satisfied after you leave. Do not forget to let them know that you saw this review on Southern Food Junkie. We appreciate our fans.

Bisquick Sausage Cheese Biscuits Recipe – Easy Southern Breakfast Biscuits

October 5, 2016 by Ronnie Williams Leave a Comment

We all have that one cherished food that effortlessly transports us back to the innocence of childhood. For many, it's the joy of baking cakes or crafting candies during the holiday season. Personally, indulging in the delightful Bisquick Sausage & Cheese biscuits never fails to evoke some of my fondest memories from childhood.

What does this Bisquick Sausage and Cheese Biscuits taste like?

As mentioned earlier, these bear a resemblance to sausage balls for those familiar with them. The key distinction lies in the texture—these biscuits are airier, resembling traditional biscuits, as opposed to the denseness of sausage balls.

Unlike the three-ingredient Sausage balls that omit milk, the Bisquick Sausage & Cheese Biscuits recipe incorporates milk, contributing to a fluffier rise.

This image is a closeup view of what the texture and inside of the sausage and cheese biscuits look like.

The flavor profile is a delightful fusion of seasoned pork sausage, accented by savory notes from sage, and the sharp richness of cheddar cheese. The result is a savory, cheesy, and subtly spiced treat, with the bonus of a fluffy biscuit-like texture.

How To Make Bisquick Sausage & Cheese Biscuits

Whipping up a batch of Bisquick Sausage & Cheese Biscuits is a delightful journey into the world of savory indulgence. The process is as simple as it is rewarding

Step-by-step Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Start by using the skillet to brown the breakfast sausage. Use the mix and chop or a wooden spoon to break up the pork sausage and continue to stir until the meat has browned. Drain and set aside to cool.
  • Next, grate the cheddar cheese and place aside.

Mixing the ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, add in the bisquick baking mix and stir in the milk. Mix until the dough starts to form.
  • Next, use your hands to finish mixing until the ingredients have come together to form a dough ball.
  • Add in the sausage crumbles and the grated Shredded Cheese.
  • Mix until all the ingredients have combined. Use your hands for this task.

Making the Biscuits

  • Turn the dough ball out onto the pastry mat or a lightly floured surface.
  • Using your hands, form a rectangle with the dough ball, and pat it down flat.
  • Next, use the rolling pin to roll out a rectangle roughly ½ inch to 1 inch thick.
  • Use a biscuit cutter or a cup with a sharp edge to cut the biscuits out.
  • Place the biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet

Baking the biscuits

  • Place the biscuits in the preheated oven.
  • Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.
  • Allow to cool then enjoy.

RECIPE NOTES

Make sure to buy block cheese and shred it yourself. Preshredded cheese has a coating to prevent sticking. This will affect the flavor of the biscuits. Avoid overmixing the biscuit dough, as excessive mixing can lead to a tougher texture. When cutting out the biscuits, refrain from twisting the cup or biscuit cutter as it passes through the dough. Twisting seals the edges, hindering the biscuits' rise. Instead, apply firm, downward pressure in a straight motion to ensure optimal results.

Substitutions

  • You can substitute Almond Milk for regular milk if you do not wish to use regular milk.
  • Bisquick can be sustained in a ratio of 1:1 by adding 1 cup of all-purpose flour, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 1 ½ teaspoon of baking powder. Bisquick does contain Hydrogenated oil but the oil from the cheese and sausage should suffice for this.

Recipe Variations To Try

  • Pepper jack cheese
  • Hot sausage
  • Add jalapeños
  • Make in muffin tins
  • Mini biscuit sandwiches

Storage Tips

Store the Bisquick Sausage & Cheese Biscuits in an airtight container for up to 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator.
